  • As well as being the home of road racing, the Isle of Man has much to offer visitors at any time of the year. Despite being fondly referred to as the ‘Rock’ by residents, the Isle of Man is actually approximately the same size as Ibiza and Singapore. Though with a lot less people, there’s plenty more space to enjoy yourself!

If the thrill of watching the motorcycle racers tackle the challenging Mountain Circuit once a year isn’t enough, there is also the Manx Grand Prix which is held towards the end of August. The ‘Manx’ has built up a reputation in recent years for offering a unique experience for visitors, very different to the TT and appealing especially to those with an interest in classic and vintage machines. Racing features classic classes as well as the more modern machines and TT stars of the future will often venture to the Manx Grand Prix before taking on the TT itself.

You can also travel at a slightly slower pace than the TT racers on our unique heritage railways – Manx Electric Railway, Steam Railway and Snaefell Mountain Railway.

  • Starz Holds On to Rights for Sony Movies

Starz extended its agreement with Sony Corp.’s film business by five years.

Starz STRZA +7.08% extended its agreement with Sony Corp.’s 6758.TO -10.14% film business by five years, giving the premium cable network exclusive pay-television rights to Sony Pictures Entertainment movie releases through 2021.

Class A shares were up 8% at $18 in midday trading.

The deal comes about two months after Starz was outbid by Netflix Inc. NFLX -1.76% for rights to Walt Disney Co. DIS +0.16% movies.

The new agreement with Sony provides movie content for all Starz platforms including its Starz and Encore channels as well as through on-demand and online streaming services.

Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Starz was spun off by Liberty Media Corp. LMCA +0.78% in January as Liberty aimed to free up cash to pursue its effort to take over Sirius XM Radio Inc. SIRI +0.96%

The developments at Starz reflect broader shifts in the premium cable sector, long dominated by Time Warner Inc.’s TWX -1.09% HBO and CBS Corp.’s CBS -1.26% Showtime. While these channels originated as outlets for movies, the proliferation of movies on various outlets including on-demand services and cheap DVD rental services has reduced their value for premium movie channels.

Venice Baroque Orchestra Plays Vivaldi and Friends at Zankel

There was no grand thought or theme to unify the Venice Baroque Orchestra’s program at Zankel Hall on Wednesday evening, unless it was a sheer delight in virtuosity. For 21st-century listeners the elements of the ensemble’s name point most readily to Vivaldi, who occupied the first half of the program.

“Igor Stravinsky famously quipped that Vivaldi did not write 500 concertos,” ToniMarie Marchioni wrote in the program notes, “but instead one concerto 500 times.” Perhaps, but, according to leading Vivaldi specialists, another modernist composer, Luigi Dallapiccola, said it first, using the number 600.

Whoever is to blame, the excellent Venetians, led from the harpsichord by their director, Andrea Marcon, quickly disproved that canard, if disproof were still needed. Their first concerto offering was the moody flute work “La Notte” (“Night,” RV 439), which has six movements, alternating slow and fast, the second titled “Ghosts,” the fifth “Sleep.” Michele Favaro’s performance of the flute part was notable for the remarkable evenness and beauty of its extended trills.

Two other concertos hewed to Vivaldi’s three-movement norm, but both were highly individual in their explorations of instruments of widely disparate pitch. Giulia Genini, the soloist in the Bassoon Concerto in F (RV 488), played well throughout; in the madly virtuosic finale she completely dispelled the instrument’s lumbering image. And Anna Fusek drew a wealth of color from the tiny soprano recorder in the Flautino Concerto in C (RV 443).

The orchestra began with the sinfonia from Vivaldi’s serenata “La Senna Festeggiante” (“The Seine in Festivity”).

Ms. Genini and Mr. Favaro returned to open the second half, Mr. Favaro now playing oboe alongside Shai Kribus in a G minor Overture by Francesco Maria Veracini. Then Daniele Bovo took center stage in Nicola Porpora’s Cello Concerto in G, overcoming a patch of seriously sour intonation in the opening Adagio to rise to spectacular bravura heights in the fast movements.

The orchestra closed the program with Francesco Geminiani’s Concerto Grosso in D minor, “Folia” (“Folly” ), arranged from a treatment of an ancient tune in a violin sonata by Corelli. Remaining traces of solo violin work were handily dispatched by the concertmaster, Luca Mares.

The band showed its depth in an encore, when a second violinist, Gianpiero Zanocco, shone in another maniacally demanding movement of Vivaldi, from a Violin Concerto in D (RV 212). A movement from a Telemann concerto ended the evening on a non-Venetian note.

After Mr. Marcon had announced the first encore the orchestra surprised him, playing instead “Happy Birthday,” in honor of his 50th.

  • GoPro Athlete Summit 2012

GoPro invited 60 athletes from all sports to attend a 3 day summit racing cars around Sonoma Raceway in California this past June.

The past 6 months of my life has been a blur of amazing people, travel, and school. GoPro invited 60 athletes from all sports to attend a 3 day summit racing cars around Sonoma Raceway in California this past June. The overall respect and appreciation from all athletes in attendance was apparent from everyone and it was a true honor to be included in such a historic event.

Unfortunatley this gum drop wonderland landed right in the middle of my finals week at UCSC so I was forced to take one of my finals early and drive back to Santa Cruz at 4am the last day of the summit to make an 8am final. I only mention this because there are few things in the world that I would rearrange a stressful finals week for but the opportunity to get to know GoPro’s extensive team was an experience like no other and worth missing pretty much anything.

Huge shout out to GoPro for the amazing experience and already fired up for the 2013 Athlete Summit! Props to Matt Baker for being the most ballin race partner ever and Reno Makani (renomakani.com) for collaborating footage.
